Quilt Along 2023 – ‘HOMETOWN’ by Diane Knott – Part 2
General Instructions:
The measurements given for cutting include seam allowances of 7 mm (1/4”), rounded to 15 mm (1/2”) for two seams. Make any necessary adjustments.
The measurements in the explanatory diagrams do not include seam allowances.
For the templates, add a seam allowance of 7 mm (1/4”) all around.
Cutting key:
: Square cut on one diagonal
For those preferring the traditional cutting method, note that you will find:
- the templates on the pattern sheet (or at the end of the project); add seam allowances to them
- the quantities in bold in the Cutting section of each step
Reminder of the necessary supplies for the project:
The fabrics are 110 cm (44”) wide.
- • Beige fabric, for the background:
- o 3.7 m (4yd)
- • Assortment of many coloured fabrics, for the front of the houses:
- o 1.2 m (11/3yd) total
- • Blue fabric, for the front of the castle:
- o 25 cm (1/4yd)
- • Assortment of many light-coloured fabrics, for doors and windows:
- o 30 cm (12”) total
- • Assortment of grey and brown fabrics, for roofs and tree trunks:
- o 70 cm (3/4yd)
- • Assortment of 6 or 7 different green fabrics, for trees:
- o 45 cm (1/2yd) total, including one measuring 10 cm (4”) for part 3
- • Orange fabric, for the pinwheels:
- o 25 cm (1/4yd)
- • Green fabric, for the zig-zagging borders:
- o 20 cm (8”)
- • Backing and batting: 160 x 160 cm (64” x 64”)
PART 2 – 5 A blocks, 1 B block, and 1 C block
Cutting and assembling:
Diagram 5:
For each of the 5 A blocks, cut:
- From one fabric from the coloured assortment:
- 3 A1 rectangles, measuring 4 x 9 cm (11/2” x 31/2”)
- From one fabric from the light-coloured assortment:
- 1 A1 rectangle, measuring 4 x 9 cm (11/2” x 31/2”)
- From the beige fabric:
- 1 A2 triangle and 1 A2’ triangle (reverse A2 template)
- From one fabric from the grey assortment:
- 1 A3 triangle
Sew an A1 rectangle from the colouredassortment on each side of an A1 rectangle from the light-coloured assortment.
Add the remaining A1 rectangle from coloured assortment on top.
Sew an A2 and A2’ triangle on each side of an A3 triangle.
Sew these units together, in order to obtain one A block.
Make 5 similar A blocks in total.
Diagram 6:
For the B block, cut:
- From the beige fabric:
- 2 B1 squares with 4 cm (11/2”) sides
- 2 B2 triangles and 2 B2’ triangles (reverse B2 template)
- 1 B4 rectangle measuring 6.5 x 9 cm (21/2” x 31/2”)
- From one fabric from the grey assortment:
- 1 B1 square with 4 cm (11/2”) sides
- From one fabric from the green assortment:
- 2 B3 triangles
Sew a beige B1 square on each side of the grey B1 square.
Sew a B2 triangle, as well as a B2’ triangle, on each side of a B3 triangle twice.
Sew these units together and add the B4 rectangle above to obtain the B block.
Diagram 7:
For the C block, cut:
- From the beige fabric:
- 2 C1 squares D with 4 cm (11/2”) sides
- 1 C2 triangle and 1 C2’ triangle (reverse C2 template)
- 1 C4 rectangle measuring 6.5 x 9 cm (21/2” x 31/2”)
- 2 C1 squares D with 4 cm (11/2”) sides
- From one fabric from the grey assortment:
- 1 C1 square with 4 cm (11/2”) sides
- 1 C1 square with 4 cm (11/2”) sides
- From one fabric from the green assortment:
- 1 C3 triangle
Sew a beige C1 square on each side of the grey C1 square.
Sew a C2 triangle and a C2’ triangle on each side of the C3 triangle.
Sew these units together and add the C4 rectangle above to obtain the C block.
Diagram 8:
- In the beige fabric:
- 1 A strip measuring 6.5 x 61.5 cm (21/2” x 241/2”)
- 1 B rectangle measuring 6.5 x 19 cm (21/2” x 71/2”)
- 1 C rectangle C measuring 5 x 19 cm (11/2” x 71/2”)
Sew, in this order, 4 A blocks, 1 B rectangle, 1 B block, 1 C rectangle, 1 A block and 1 C block.
Add 1 A strip beneath.
This 2nd part should measure 24 x 61.5 cm (91/2” x 241/2”), with seam allowances.
